The Combined Effect of Ultraviolet Irradiation and Temperature on Hot Mix Asphalt Mixture Aging

Reliable accelerated simulation of asphalt aging is significant interest to researchers and pavement practitioners alike. However, current laboratory protocols are either based on binder rather than mixture or use dry ovens heat mixtures, omitting the important effects UV radiation. Binder cannot take into account interactions between aggregate phases during aging, while omission radiation ignores an catalyst in process. In this study, a comparison effect conventional thermal oven combined ultraviolet irradiation resilient modulus surface texture dense-graded field cores gyratory-compacted samples was undertaken. Significantly higher rates increase with time were measured for aged by both irradiation. The showed more realistic results terms compared cores, likely due extraction from small area that subjected concentrated pneumatic tyre rolling, which not representative typical construction. It concluded using indices, calculated as ratio value initial value, recommended investigations. findings study highlight significance importance developing combine heat, irradiation, any other environmental factors may affect behaviour mixtures.
